Pushchairs in Barcelona

Barcelona is easier with a pushchair than many European cities. Most metro stations have lifts and every city bus is step-free. Here’s how to get around, and which places are trickier.

Getting Around Barcelona with a Pushchair

The metro with a pushchair

Most metro stations have lifts connecting the street, the ticket hall and the platforms. Look for the lift symbol on the metro map.

Buses

All TMB buses are low-floor with a ramp and have dedicated spaces for pushchairs and wheelchairs. They’re often easier than the metro for short trips.

Which areas are easiest?

The Eixample, the seafront and the big parks have wide, smooth pavements. The Gothic Quarter and El Born have narrow lanes and some cobbles, and hilly sights such as Park Güell and Montjuïc have slopes and steps.

Attractions

Most big attractions are fine with a pushchair, but some have restrictions. For example, pushchairs aren’t allowed in the Sagrada Família towers. Check each attraction’s page for latest details.

Quick tips

  • Metro: About 93% of stations have lifts from the street to the platforms.

  • Buses: Every city bus is step-free, with space for pushchairs.

  • Old town: Narrow, busy and sometimes cobbled. A carrier can be easier.

  • Check first: Lifts are sometimes out of service, so check the TMB app before you travel.

Good to know

  • Buy online, collect on arrival: Booking ahead is easier (and 10% cheaper for the Barcelona Card). Then pick up your cards at the airport or a tourist information point when you arrive.

  • Transport included: Both cards include unlimited metro, bus, tram and train travel, including to and from the airport.

  • One card each: Cards are personal, so every adult and every child aged 4 to 12 needs their own.

  • One visit per attraction: Free entry is one visit per person at each attraction. Transport is unlimited.

  • Children: Child cards are for ages 4 to 12. From 13, children need an adult card, and under-4s go free.

  • Starting the card: It starts the first time you use it and runs for consecutive hours, so start it in the morning.

  • Cancelling: Both cards have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
